What It Is

The Direct Support Initiative (Open Table) is BURDZ-I’s frontline service model designed to meet veterans and their families where they already are. Rather than creating standalone facilities, Open Table integrates directly into trusted veteran-facing environments such as American Legion posts, university Veteran Resource Centers, USOs, and military-adjacent community spaces, to establish a consistent, welcoming presence for guidance, and support.

“Open Table” represents accessibility and dignity. A place where veterans and families can sit down, be heard, and receive real assistance without barriers, confusion, or stigma. The initiative exists to simplify access to support systems and ensure veterans and their household have a common place to go get questions answered.

How It Operates

The Open Table model operates through embedded presence and partnership—serving as a guided access point rather than a duplicative service provider.

BURDZ-I places trained representatives directly within trusted veteran-serving environments to act as official points of contact for veterans and their families. These representatives do not replace existing systems or agencies. Instead, they provide a safe, neutral space where veterans can ask questions, receive guidance, and be supported while navigating the resources already available to them—particularly VA-related programs and benefits.

From these locations, Open Table officials primarily assist by:

  • Navigating VA-specific resources and requests, helping veterans understand options, processes, and next steps

  • Providing general guidance and referrals, ensuring veterans are connected to the correct programs, agencies, or community partners

  • Offering wellness and family-oriented resource direction, including physical, mental, and household support pathways

  • Supporting career and economic navigation, connecting veterans to education, employment, and community opportunities

  • Facilitating access to BURDZ-I programs, including housing and stability support, when needs extend beyond existing systems

By maintaining a consistent presence inside trusted environments, Open Table reduces confusion and lowers barriers to access. Veterans are not required to enroll in a new system or navigate unfamiliar processes. Instead, they receive personal guidance from an informed, accountable representative whose role is to listen, clarify, and help chart a clear path forward.

Each Open Table location operates under defined scope, formal governance, and accountability standards, ensuring alignment with partner institutions, transparency for donors, and responsible support for every veteran and family served.

Why It Matters

Veterans and their families often face challenges not because support doesn’t exist, but because it’s difficult to understand, access, or navigate. The Direct Support Initiative (Open Table) exists to solve that problem.

By placing trained representatives inside trusted veteran-serving spaces, Open Table provides a safe, human point of guidance where veterans can ask questions, understand their options, and receive help navigating VA and community resources. This clarity reduces frustration, prevents delays, and helps families access the support they’ve earned faster and with confidence.

Open Table matters because it turns complex systems into clear paths, replaces confusion with guidance, and ensures veterans are never left to navigate critical resources alone.
